Details below. -----Original Message----- CALL FOR PAPERS One Hundred and Twenty Years of Homosexuality Lambda Classical Caucus Panel, American Philological Association Anaheim, January 6-9, 2010 Organizers: Ruby Blondell (blondell at u.washington.edu) and Kirk Ormand (Kirk.Ormand at oberlin.edu) The APA/AIA meeting in January 2010 will mark the twentieth anniversary of the Lambda Classical Caucus (founded at the APA in December 1989). This year will also mark the twentieth anniversary of a pair of enormously influential books: David Halperin's One Hundred Years of Homosexuality and Jack Winkler's Constraints of Desire. Published in the same year, in the same series (Routledge's New Ancient World), and often reviewed together, these two books introduced many classicists to queer theory for the first time and revolutionized the field of queer classics. If that were not enough, 1990 likewise saw the publication by Princeton of Before Sexuality: The Construction of Erotic Experience in the Ancient Greek World, edited by Halperin, Winkler, and Froma Zeitlin. David Halperin was also--not coincidentally--the founder of the Lambda Classical Caucus (for our history visit http://www.lambdacc.org/about.html). This seems a good moment, then, to celebrate what we have achieved--both as an organization and as an intellectual movement--over the past 20 years, and to look forward to what we may achieve in the next 20, by asking where we have come from, what we have accomplished, and what still remains to be done. While celebrating the past, and the path that brought us here, we also want to consider where we stand now, and how best to go forward. Which methodological tools are still proving useful, which need to be reassessed or sharpened, and which have had their day? What avenues of inquiry, theoretical models, or forms of evidence, have been overlooked or come into recent prominence? How have social and political developments, within or beyond the academy, reconfigured the world of queer classics, its constraints or opportunities, since 1990? While we are especially interested in the methods and concerns of Halperin and Winkler (comparative anthropology, the application of queer theory to classics, Foucault's formulation of "sexuality" as a peculiarly modern form of knowledge, the articulation of pre-modern sexual identities), and their influence upon the field, we are open to submissions exploring any aspect of the current state and future directions of queer classics. Abstracts might address such topics as our understanding of "active" and "passive" roles in Greece and Rome, ancient notions of sexual subjectivity, categories of sexual behavior, shame and honor, the practice of paederasty, the intersection(s) of gender and sexual identity, questions of evidence, and/or the periodicity of particular sexual categories, values, or identities. In keeping with Lambda traditions, we welcome submissions that deal with material culture as well as those focussing on texts and/or other forms of evidence. Abstracts should be sent as Word attachments to Joy Connolly (joyc at nyu.edu) by February 10, 2009. (Do not send them to the organizers.) Personal identifying information should not appear on the abstract itself. Abstracts should be no more than one page and should follow the instructions for individual abstracts on p. 6 of the APA Program Guide at http://www.apaclassics.org/Newsletter/2007newsletter/1007insert.pdf. _______________________________________________ members mailing list members at lambdacc.org http://lambdacc.org/mailman/listinfo/members_lambdacc.org From andrewlear2 at gmail.com Mon Feb 2 18:49:56 2009 From: andrewlear2 at gmail.com (Andrew Lear) Date: Mon, 2 Feb 2009 21:49:56 -0500 Subject: [LCC] using my book? Message-ID: <7a8aceec0902021849t18025751xd3de8b4154be6123@mail.gmail.com> Hi, fellow lambda Classicists, Routledge is apparently bringing out a paperback of edition of my book "Images of Ancient Greek Pederasty." It should come out next fall, but they said I should let them know if anyone might use it in a course in the fall semester: perhaps this would get them to hurry it out. Any takers? A few people have put sections in coursepacks, and a couple have told me they will assign it when it comes out in pbk, but not till next spring. Sorry, by the way, to those who asked for desk copies. They have not been generous, understandably enough, with the $100 hardcovers, but maybe they will with the pbk; I kept a list of requests. Thanks!! For CAAS panels, you have to have your presenters lined up in order to propose the panel. The deadline for panel proposals in April 1. Thus, this CALL FOR PAPERS is for real, but I want anyone who submits an abstract to understand that having your abstract selected doesn't mean my panel proposal will be accepted. But of course, we hope for the best, right? So please submit. And please note, the abstracts will undergo a blinded peer review process. CALL FOR PAPERS Queer Theory and Classical Studies: Current Directions in Research and Practice Queer is a highly contested term, but queer theory may be defined as a critique of sex and gender categories based on the idea that binaries such as man/woman and heterosexual/homosexual do not adequately contain the spectrum of sex and gender identity that occurs in lived experience. While queer theory grows out of gender studies, feminism, and the history of sexuality, it is particularly concerned with the genesis of knowledge about sex and gender and the power dynamics inherent in discourses associated with these categories. Classicists have been exploring issues of gender and sexuality in earnest at least since the 1970s, albeit not necessarily under the rubric of queer theory. This panel provides an opportunity to share work that engages queer theory explicitly, regardless of how consonant that work may be with the brief explanation of the term offered above; that is, all definitions of "queer" and "queer theory" are welcome, so long as the work bears a recognizable relationship to previous work done under those rubrics, whether in classics or in other fields. Submissions by classicists at all levels are encouraged, including faculty in any type of educational or academic setting, graduate students, and undergraduates, as well as unaffiliated scholars (but please note: you must be a CAAS member to present a paper on a CAAS panel). Papers may consider both material and literary culture and may draw on sources from history, philosophy, poetry (epic, lyric, dramatic, satiric), prose (history, oratory, philosophy), art (painting, sculpture, coins, jewelry), architecture and archaeology. Papers may also employ queer theoretical approaches to classical reception, including both creative and scholarly receptions of classical antiquity. Please submit abstracts of 300 words or less to Michael Broder at mbroder at gc.cuny.edu. On your abstract include your name, institution, city and state (country if not USA), email and phone number. Email your abstract as a Word file by March 13, 2009. Questions may be addressed to Michael Broder at mbroder at gc.cuny.edu. Queen Mary's College in Basingstoke is staging The Laramie Project, a play about a man killed for being gay. The UK Border Agency said it opposed "extremism in all its forms". A spokesman added: "Both these individuals have engaged in unacceptable behaviour by inciting hatred against a number of communities. * 'Punished by God' * "The government has made it clear it opposes extremism in all its forms. "We will continue to stop those who want to spread extremism, hatred and violent messages in our communities from coming to our country. "The exclusions policy is targeted at all those who seek to stir up tension and provoke others to violence regardless of their origins and beliefs." The Westboro church's website advertised the picket which was set to take place on Friday, proclaiming: "In merry old England they plan to further enrage the living God by putting on the farce known commonly as The Laramie Project. "We will picket them, and see if they actually believe those lies they tell about how tolerant and accepting Brits are." Hampshire Police said they were aware of the planned protest and officers were monitoring the situation. The church was unavailable for comment on whether it expected UK-based members to carry out a protest at the college. Members of the group - based in Topeka, Kansas - have denounced homosexuality for years and have in the past targeted the funerals of Aids victims. In 2007, the church was told to pay $10.9m (?5.2m) after its members cheered a soldier's death as "punishment" for US tolerance of homosexuality.
